When you press the power button on your computer a signal is sent straight to the motherboard. The motherboard asks the power supply for 12 volts and the bios and chipset wakes up. The processor memory graphics card and other chips start to wake up and the image is displayed on the screen via the graphics card. The motherboard has two chipsets north bridge and south bridge, its also has the graphics card BGA chipset but lets just deal with the most important ones. The north bridge is usually the larger of the two and handles the communication between the processor and the memory. It works much harder than the south bridge chipset. this is one reason why the northbridge chipset will burn out quickr than the southbridge on the motherboard. The south bridge chipset looks after the graphics card sound card wifi, ethernet to some extent and any other peripheral component interconnect cards,PCI.
The processor is like a large calculator that has to work out unbelievable amounts of calculations of around 2 billion per second. It gets very very hot, in fact if you touch a processor without the heatsink on you will get burnt, be warned. Hence the processor requires coolant. heatsink paste will help with dissapation. As these motherboard chips can die sometimes we recommend using a good repair company. Thats why we believe if require computer repair always seek an engineer who understands how motherboards work.
